Rinkevics: Baltic States should closely cooperate in implementing 3rd Energy Package in gas sector

BC, Riga, 07.03.2013.Print version
Yesterday in Brussels, at the initiative of Economy Minister Daniels Pavluts, a meeting took place between European Commissioner for Energy Gunther Oettinger and ministers from the Baltic States, Poland and Finland. Latvia was represented by Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics (Reform Party), who emphasized the necessity of close cooperation and coordination in matters related to implementing the European Union's Third Energy Package in the gas sector, writes LETA.

Rinkevics' proposal drew a response from regional partners and the European Commission and an agreement was reached to continue discussions about a mechanism for coordinating cooperation in the matter, the Foreign Ministry's Press and Information Division informed LETA.

A common understanding was achieved, envisaging further steps in infrastructure development and gas supply source diversification in the Eastern Baltic region; nevertheless, specific projects and the sequence of their implementation require further analysis.

Speaking about the location of the LNG terminal, Rinkevics stressed that such a decision should be technically and economically feasible, preventing additional expenses for Latvian consumers and ensuring lower costs and a realistic timeline for the implementation of the project. The Latvia-Poland gas interconnection project proposed by the European Commission's Road Map and modernization of Latvia's gas infrastructure are important for Latvia, pointed out Rinkevics.

The ministers agreed to continue consultations to achieve solutions most suitable for the region in economic and geopolitical terms.
