Barclays, one of the largest banks in the United Kingdom, will establish an information technology (IT) centre in Lithuania which will serve the retail and business banking activities of the bank in the entire Western Europe.

Barclays is committed to invest at least 20 million litas (5.79 million euros) in the IT centre over 5 years and to create at least 250 jobs by the end of 2011. At its sitting on Wednesday, the Government approved the investment contract with Barclays and authorized Economy Minister Dainius Kreivys to sign the contract, informs ELTA/LETA.

The Government is obliged by the contract to grant subsidy to Barclays as a compensation for the costs related to the establishment and activities of the IT centre. The Economy Ministry and Barclays signed a letter of intent on the establishment of the centre in June this year. The Barclays bank operates in 29 countries all over the world and has over 49 million private and business clients.

According to the representatives of Barclays, Vilnius is an attractive location for such centre because of a large number of highly qualified IT specialists as well as the world-class infrastructure.
