Extreme weather conditions raised insurance premiums in autumn in Estonia

The road accidents rate increased approximately 4.5 times on October 26, and, due to the complicated weather conditions, expenses of insurance companies grew significantly, the Estonian national broadcasting corporation ERR reports.

While 79 road accidents were registered on the average autumn Friday this year, the severe weather on October 26 upped the number to 350 and caused 478,000 euros in damage, the Estonian Insurance Association has said.

The insurance association said the main reason for accidents was the unexpected nature of the heavy snowfall, which meant many drivers had not yet swapped their regular tires for the studded ones required for winter, writes LETA.
