First Model United Nations conference to be organized in Latvia

Nina Kolyako, BC, Riga, 18.04.2013.Print version
On the 20th of April, Stockholm School of Economics will host the first MUN conference organized in Latvia. MUN (Model United Nations) is a simulation where participants act as real representatives of their countries to the UN and act on their behalf as real diplomats.

The conference will focus on the Arab Spring and will be holding 3 committees: the Security Council (SC), General Assembly (GA) and Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

The MUN conferences previously took place in Estonia and Lithuania, without such an international extend as in Latvia. The participating students will not only be from the Baltics but also from France, Spain, Belarus, Russia, Georgia, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Ghana, Uzbekistan, Armenia, and India. The main purpose of the conference is to show the way international committees and organizations are structured and how they do their work and why it matters for the youth to posses this knowledge. In order to show these principles this simulation will be held. As the event is taking place for the first time, delegates will be acquainted with information by study guides written by chairmen.

The MUN conference is supported by the Swedish, Finish, Norwegian, American, Canadian and Austrian embassies, the latter of which, together with the European Parliament Information Office in Riga will give opening speeches for the event. After the conference, the most promising delegates will have personal meetings with the ambassadors.

We are happy to announce our special guests and very experienced MUN participants and organizers: Bavesh Moorthy from Austria, and political/economic officer Elaine M. Hensle from the U.S.

In LVMUN everything can happen: Palestine can get independence and North Korea might announce World War III. The key is to understand the possible dangers and try to avoid them by reaching consensus.

Participation is free of charge for participants coming from Latvian Universities, but the registration is obligatory.

Conference language will be English.

Free coffee breaks and snacks will be provided by our food sponsors and considerable discounts are offered by Burga, YoYo and Wok to Walk.

You are welcome to attend on the 20th of April from 2pm at the following address: Strēlnieku str., 4a, Stockholm School of Economics in Riga. For more information please contact [email protected] or [email protected]; +371 25525575
