Internationally renowned probiotic from Tartu

Bio-Competence Centre of Healthy Dairy Products (Tervisliku Piima Biotehnoloogiate Arenduskeskus – TPTAK) and the scientists of Tartu University have discovered and studied human origin Lactobacillus plantarum, which has by now gained international acclaim, and can be administered by eating cheese (other food products and supplements will certainly be added to the list in the future), reports eas.ee.

According to Ene Tammsaar, Manager of TPTAK, the safety of this probiotic has been tested in vitro, on lab animals and on healthy human volunteers as well.

“The isolated microorganism strain Lactobacillus plantarum TENSIA DSM 21380 is an antimicrobial probiotic that lowers blood pressure, the health benefits of which have been tested on 700 volunteers” explained Ene Tammsaar.

According to the Manager of TPTAK, the aforementioned lactobacillus can withstand technological treatment and provides added value to products. Medical research shows that it lowers blood pressure, has antimicrobial effects towards food pathogens (e.g. Listeria, Salmonella, Shigella), boosts natural immunity, decreases the likelihood of food-related infections and also has moderate antioxidant effects. Regular intake of products made with TENSIA also strengthens the body’s natural resistance towards several bacteria that cause gastrointestinal infections and increases the total amount of good lactobacilli in the intestines.

The properties of Lactobacillus plantarum TENSIA® have been patented in Estonia, 10 countries of the European Union and in Russia.

TPTAK has given a licence to use TENSIO to E-Piim Tootmine AS (E-Milk Production Ltd.), which adds the probioticum to the heart-friendly cheese Harmony. Heat-friendly Cheese Harmony entered the market in 2009 and was awarded the Best Estonian Dairy Product title the following year.

TPTAK has received several R&D project grants and grants for technology development centres from the European Regional Development Fund.
