BC, Riga, 08.04.2016.Print version
Vientuli checkpoint on the Latvian-Russian border reopened on April 7th after renovation carried out with support from the Estonia-Latvia-Russia cross-border cooperation program, the Latvian Ministry for Environment Protection and Regional Development informed LETA.

The agreement on renovation of Vientuli (Latvia)/Brunishevo (Russia) checkpoint was signed in December 2012. Total investment in renovation of the checkpoint on the Latvian side of the border was EUR 13.46 million, of which EUR 7.09 million came from the Latvian national budget and EUR 6.37 million was the EU financing from the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument (ENPI).

The renovated Vientuli checkpoint has comfortable and modern infrastructure, including five control lanes. Previously it could only handle passenger cars and passenger buses but after the renovation trucks with gross vehicle mass up to 9 tons will also be able to cross the border at Vientuli. Heavier trucks will be allowed to go through the checkpoint after renovation of roads on the Russian side.

Latvia will continue renovation of its checkpoints, and Paternieki, Silene and Terehova checkpoints are waiting for their turn under the new Latvia-Lithuania-Belarus and Latvia-Russia cross-border cooperation programs for 2014-2020.
