According to Transport Ministry calculations, Latvia earned approximately EUR 500 for each TEU container transported through the country, writes LETA.
Most of this cargo was sent to U.S. troops stationed in Afghanistan and was transported by rail. However, a small portion was sent by road.
The first nonmilitary cargo shipment to Afghanistan via Latvia was sent in in February 2009.
The Transport Ministry explains that in 2010, in cooperation with the Foreign Ministry, the two ministries were successful in persuading other NATO partners to send nonmilitary goods to their troops in Afghanistan through Latvia – Great Britain, Belgium, Spain, Sweden and Norway.
It is planned that cargo shipments the opposite direction, from Afghanistan to Latvia, could be started in the near future.
