Rubiks: sapropel is Latvia's Nokia

Nina Kolyako , BC, Riga, 19.03.2012.Print version
Sapropel is Latvia's Nokia or the possible success story in entrepreneurship and economy, believes European Parliament member Alfreds Rubiks (Harmony Center). The confirmed amount of sapropel in Latvia's lakes is worth LVL 2.5 billion, the lakes with smaller sapropel deposits not including, as Rubiks' office informed LETA.

Rubiks is determined to help Latvian producers by submitting a motion to the Agriculture Ministry on establishing a task force for the development of the given sector, as well as by initiating the work on a special document in the European Parliament that would regulate the use of sapropel and sapropelic products for the development of organic farming.

"This is in Latvia's interest fist of all, because Latvia cannot compete with the large European countries in terms of traditional agriculture. Organic farming using organic fertilizers may become our forte," believes Rubiks.

For several years already, representatives of the Latvian government, who are frequently replaced, beg for subsidies and funding from the European Union for the development of future production capacities. In the meantime, a group of enthusiasts in Latvia has been trying to drum up support for products that potential consumers and buyers are very excited about – but not Latvia's officials.

Sapropel is considered a highly valuable organic fertilizer in Europe. Latvian companies have developed truly innovative products on the basis of sapropel, with independent tests carried out in many countries of the world – except Latvia. Here Latvian inventors can find no support from officials. This is because sapropel is not mentioned as fertilizer in the EU directives. No one is concerned though about the fact that peat is also not mentioned in the EU directives, says Rubiks.

Development of local production, the creation of Latvian Nokia is much talked about, but it will not happen by miracle. Certain actions must be taken, and money is necessary for the development of production, notes Rubiks.
