U.S. ambassador confirms high potential of Latvia's freight transport and logistics

Latvia's logistics and freight transport between Europe and the East have great potential, U.S. Ambassador to Latvia Mark Pekala said during a visit to the state-owned railroad company Latvijas Dzelzcels (LDz) Friday.

Pekala and a delegation had meetings with LDz managers, visited LDz subsidiary LDz Apsardze management center and Skirotava Station's sorting facility.


Opening the visit, the ambassador met with the LDz President Ugis Magone and other LDz officials to get acquainted with the company's operations, achievements and future plans. The sides discussed Latvian-U.S. cooperation in transporting NATO freights to and from Afghanistan.


This visit attests to the fact that LDz is a stable, modern company with high reputation, and to the high quality of transit services offered by Latvia is attractive to partners in the East and West alike, said Magonis. "Today the U.S. ambassador and delegation were acquainted with our new major investment projects that in the future will improve our competitiveness in not only Latvia but also abroad," he added.


Pekala said he had a high opinion of the opportunity to visit LDz and see the company at work. Latvia's logistics and freight transport between Europe and the East has great potential, he said, adding that the United States supported Latvia's measures to further develop this potential, and that LDz played an important role in attaining this goal.
