Lithuania registered the second steepest increase in EU in August

Retail trade turnover in Latvia increased 2.1% in August 2013, compared to August 2012, the seventh steepest increase across the European Union, according to the latest data from the EU's statistical office Eurostat. Lithuania registered the second steepest increase, informs LETA.

The steepest year-on-year increases were recorded in Luxembourg – 15.3%, Lithuania – 6.1%, and Bulgaria – 4.9%.

 

The largest retail trade turnover reductions were registered in Spain – six%, Slovenia – 2.8%, and Denmark – 0.7%.

 

Similar to Latvia, retail trade turnover in Sweden also increased by 2.1%. Compared to August 2012, retail trade turnover in Estonia increased 3.6% in August 2013.

 

Of all member states for which data are available, retail trade turnover in August increased in 14 and reduced in seven. Retail trade turnover in the EU increased 1.3% in August, while the eurozone saw a 0.3% decrease. Compared to July, retail trade turnover in the EU grew 0.4% in August, in the eurozone – 0.7%.

 

Six member states reported decreases in retail trade turnover in August, compared to July. 14 reported increases. Retail trade turnover in Denmark remained unchanged.

 

The steepest month-on-month increases were observed in Portugal – 4.8%, Spain – 3.8%, and Slovenia – 3.2%.

 

The largest reductions were recorded in Luxembourg – 1.4%, Great Britain – 1.1%, and Belgium – 0.9%.

 

In comparison with July, retail trade turnover in Latvia fell by 0.4% in August. Meanwhile, Lithuania saw a 1.1% monthly increase in retail trade turnover, while Estonia registered a 0.5% rise.
