These two options have been discussed with the World Bank experts, Jursevska informed.
In the first case, the retirement age will be increased by six months each year starting 2012, and the retirement age will reach 65 in 2017.
If the retirement age is raised starting 2016, it will reach 65 in 2021.
The retirement age will be increased gradually and the current unemployment and life expectancy figures will be taken into account; the retirement age will not be hiked to 65 in 2010 already, said Jursevska.
At this time, the retirement age for both men and women is 62.
Latvian Pensioners Federation said previously that increasing the retirement age is unacceptable before 2012. There are very many people of pensionable age who have become unemployed, and these people will hardly be able to find jobs if the retirement age is raised, said the federation's chairwoman Aina Verze.
Verze does not deny that the retirement age needs to be increased, but she believes that it must be done sometime later after the crisis is over.
