The Association of Trade Unions of State and Local Government Employees and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Estonia reached an agreement on Monday on the pay cut for police officers writes the National Broadcasting/LETA.

According to the agreement, the police officers' first pay level was decreased by 8%.

"The solution is that the first pay level of police officers will be by eight% smaller, as is the case for border guards and rescue services," said minister of internal affairs Marko Pomerants.

He added that the first pay level of the police will be from July 1 this year 8,280 kroons per month.

"As we promised on behalf of the ministry, that due to budgetary reasons there will not be any redundancies among the police officers in 2009 and from October 1, 2009, we will launch pay negotiations on the year 2010 with representatives of police officers, rescue officers and border guards," said the minister.

Pomerants stated that he was pleased with the agreement. "In my opinion, the agreement was very realistic, based on the actual situation – it was not easy for either of the sides," he stated.
