Raimonds Munkevics elected as Jurmala mayor in Latvia

Munkevics was the mayor of Jurmala from September 2006 to October last year.
The other candidate for the office was Jurmala ATU Director Juris Visockis (New Era); four Jurmala councilmen voted for him.
According to LETA's archives, Munkevics was born in 1962. He graduated from the Riga Technical University with a degree in construction engineering in 2000, and a Master's degree in heat, gas and water supply systems in 2003.
In 2004, Munkevics was appointed chairman of the board at Jurmalas namsaimnieks company, but was dismissed in February 2006 by then Jurmala Mayor Inese Aizstrauta on suspicion of illegal business practices at the company.
Munkevics, first a member of New Era's Jurmala branch, was elected chairman of a new political organization –"Jurmala – Our Home", in November 2004.
Munkevics has also worked as chairman of the housing development consultative council at the Regional Development and Local Governments Ministry. He is president of the Association of Management and Administration of Latvian Housing.
