Latvian Interior Minister: number of committed crimes climbing, also number of uncovered crimes

Alla Petrova, BC, Riga, 06.10.2009.Print version
Since the economic crisis began, the number of crimes committed has risen, but so has the number of uncovered and solved crimes, said Interior Minister Linda Murniece (New Era) this morning on Latvian State Radio.

Linda Murniece.

Murniece pointed out that during the crisis, crooks have become more active, the number of policemen has decreased, but the situation is under control. Despite the budget cuts, the police's response to crime has not lessened. She noted that the number of armed robberies has grown the most, as has the number of petty thefts.

As a priority, Minister Murniece named guaranteeing that the community feels that the police are doing their job and that they can be depended on.

As for the 2010 national budget, she mentioned that the reduction in her sector will be proportionally less than others, about LVL 7 million, but that "more than that is impossible." Murniece opined that a LVL 500 million slash in the national budget overall is also impossible.
