Jurmala city councilmen voted in a new mayor this afternoon, expressing support for Romualds Razuks (Civic Union). 11 voted for Razuks, two against. Last night, after electing a new chairman, voted in businessman Maris Dzenitis as deputy mayor.

Romualds Razuks.

Romualds Razuks (born 1955) is Lithuanian by birth, a physician by education and profession. In his political career, he has been both a Riga city councilman and a Saeima deputy.

Dzenitis (born 1967) is CEO at Nemo Holdings and is board member at several other companies. He has been included several times on Latvia's millionaires list.

He was elected to the council on the Jurmala-Our Home ticket, but soon dropped out of the party.

Dzenitis is developer of the all-season ski slope project "Kapa"("Dune"), and is currently being sued by its investor – Russian businessman Boris Teterev, who claims he was swindled. Riga Regional Court is scheduled to review Teterev's petition in June.

At last night's emergency council meeting, statutes were amended in order to have only one deputy mayor, i.e. Dzenitis, who will be responsible for economy and development.

Newly-elected Mayor Romualds Razuks (Civic Union) commented to LETA that Dzenitis has "a lot of original ideas for the city's development."

Razuks replaces Raimonds Munkevics (Jurmala-Our Home), who was removed from office yesterday and is currently behind bars.
