Lithuanian president sceptical regarding dual citizenship

The President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite stated that the dual citizenship should be granted on rare occasions in Lithuania, as The Lithuania tribune reports referring to the president's statement made in an interview to Baltijos Televizija on July 7, 2011.

The president emphasized that the citizenship is a means of loyalty to the particular state which is stated in the Constitution.

"Every new citizenship is an oath of loyalty to another state. If we look at the oaths, for example, to the United States or other countries, they leave virtually no room for another oath. Therefore, the citizenship issue is not very simple," Grybauskaite said in an interview to the television channel.

"Citizenship issues are not easy ones. Dual citizenship as a phenomenon is applied on rare occasions and by very few states. This does not mean it is necessary. Feeling Lithuanian is what's most important. Knowing where your Homeland is and being useful and helpful. With a passport or without it - this is another question," Grybauskaite said.

According to the Article 12 of the Lithuanian Constitution, the dual citizenship in Lithuania is allowed "with the exception of individual cases provided for by law, no one may be a citizen of both the Republic of Lithuania and another state at the same time."

As reported, Grybauskate stated at her speech during the State Day last week that Lithuania is a modern state which expresses Lithuanians' own identity and heritage, writes LETA/ELTA.
