CPB's Strike not getting her hopes up in regard to rapid reduction of corruption in Latvia

There is not much hope that the corruption level in Latvia will lessen anytime soon, the acting chief of the Corruption Prevention Bureau (CPB), Juta Strike, said yesterday during a Saeima Corruption Prevention Sub-Committee meeting.

Juta Strike.

Strike pointed out that with CPB's current resources, it would be a good result to see corruption figures drop gradually every year. According to her, Latvia has many ministries, local governments and limited liability companies that are under corruption risk, whilst staff numbers at CPB are restricted. Furthermore, the staff must have the necessary knowledge and experience to work independently and make the right decisions, writes LETA.

''If we, for example, concentrate all of our work on one local government, then maybe we would be able to completely rid it of corruption,'' the acting CPB chief points out.

Strike also added that the CPB work in high stress, as no one forgives any mistakes made by the bureau.
