Today, Latvia will officially become an observer country in the African Union, LETA was informed by the Foreign Ministry's press and information department.

Latvian Ambassador to Egypt Maris Selga will officially submit a note from the Latvian foreign minister to the African Union at the union's headquarters in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.

In becoming an observer at the African Union, Latvia continues to confirm its desire to expand cooperation with African countries.

This status will allow Latvia to expand its view on Africa, as well as help support Latvian businessmen who wish to expand into the African continent. Latvia will also be able to increase cooperation with African countries, as well as share its experience in many areas, like regional cooperation between countries in the Baltic Sea region.

The African Union was established in 2001 and it currently consists of 53 member states.
