KaPo arrests a former Estonian civil servant suspected of treason

Estonian Security Police (KaPo) detained on Wednesday a former Estonian internal security official who is suspected of treason; the Harju County Court arrested him initially for six months on Friday, Public Broadcasting reports, informs LETA.

The State Prosecutor's Office might reveal the identity and information about the suspect during a press conference scheduled for this afternoon.


The Estonian Punitive Code prescribes up to lifetime prison punishment for treason.


So far, two persons have been convicted in Estonia for treason. In February 2009, the court convicted former high state official Herman Simm for treason and proceeding confidential information to the Russian foreign intelligence service and sentenced him to prison for 12 years and 6 months.


In July last year, the court convicted KaPo official Aleksei Dressen of treason and proceeding confidential information and punished him with 16 years in prison. His wife Viktoria Dressen was convicted as an accessory to these acts and punished with a 6 year conditional prison sentence with 5 years probation.
