Selling energy drinks to underage persons to be banned in Latvia

As of June 1, 2016, selling energy drinks to persons under 18 years of age will be banned in Latvia under new legislation passed in the final reading by Saeima, informs LETA.

The law will oblige shop attendants to check the documents of young shoppers buying energy drinks to make sure that they are not too young to buy them, and shoppers will have to produce ID documents at the retailer's request.
The purpose of the new restrictions is to protect young people against the harmful effects energy drinks can have on human health. In the law, energy drinks have been defined as non-alcoholic beverages in which caffeine levels exceed 150 milligrams per liter and that also contain one or several stimulating substances like taurine, guarana and ginkgo extracts, etc.
