Cement producer Cemex has increased exports to Russia and the Baltic countries and launched exports to Scandinavia, LETA learned from the company.

"Exporting cement is one of our strategic priorities. Eventually we are planning to export up to 50% of cement we produce," said Cemex Strategic Planning Director Mihails Mazurkevics.

The company has invested much money in the development of new infrastructure in order to consolidate its position: a new cement import/export terminal has been built in Liepaja, new rolling stock has been acquired, and the existing facilities of the company have been modernized.

At the moment, St. Petersburg and northwest Russia are the largest export markets of Cemex. To further consolidate its position and sell cement directly to consumers, the company has opened new representative offices in this region. Cemex has also opened new offices in Estonia, and reached an important agreement on cement supplies to Finland.

A new Cemex plant in Broceni is undergoing tests at this time, the new plant will be officially opened later this year. EUR 250 million has been invested in the development of the new plant, and it is the most up to date cement plant in the European Union and the largest industrial investment project in Latvia since the restoration of independence.

During the construction of the new plant, more than 700 subcontractors were provided with jobs, and 100 new jobs were created at Cemex, said Mazurkevics.

The Mexican company Cemex is one of the largest cement production companies in the world, its branches are operating in 50 countries in various continents. In 2005, the holding company bought the Latvian producer RMC Baltic and the concrete factory Broceni, uniting them as the company Cemex.
