One of the largest retail networks in Lithuania – Rimi Lietuva is the first in Lithuania to label products that contain genetically modified organisms (GMO) in its shopping centers, the company announced.

Genetically modified product (GMP) is a product that contains genetically modified organisms or their parts. GMO is made from genetic substance that has been artificially modified employing genetic engineering technologies and has gained qualities which would not exist if an organism multiplied naturally. There are contradictory opinions on GMO products in the world. Some scientists think that GMO could cause allergic reactions, cancer and other health disorders, informs ELTA.

In the world genetically modified organisms have been applied to food since 1990. Soy, tomatoes, rice and maize are vegetables that are most frequently modified. According to laws and regulations of the European Union, consumers must be informed about the use of products that were developed applying genetic engineering technologies and all the possible related risks.

Presently, Rimi Lietuva operates 58 shops – 23 "Rimi Supermarket", 10 "Rimi Hypermarket" and 25 discounter shops "Supernetto".
