Lithuania-grown vegetables to be out of stock before end of the winter
However, wholesalers suggest not to dramatize the situation on the Lithuanian vegetable market.
"Upon demand vegetables will be brought from other states, therefore peaking prices are not expected," stated the head of Lithuania's vegetables wholesalers' union Vaisiai ir Darzoves Laimute Grybauskaite.
According to official data, prices of potatoes on the Lithuania's market at the first week of this year in comparison with an end of the previous year went up by approximately 34%, for carrots the price dynamics was 16%, for beetroots – 5%, and cabbage – 4%, writes LETA/ELTA.
At the turn of the year only price of onion remained on the previous level, and chives are traded even cheaper.
A representative of Lithuanian vegetables growers association Sauliuus Babrauskas notes that farmers sell potatoes to those who offer higher price: "Lithuania-based trade centers are not willing to pay much, therefore potatoes are exported," he said.
Ms. Grybauskate points out that there is little demand for unprocessed beetroots in European states. Sales volume of this vegetable is moderate in Lithuania; therefore, its price varies from 0.45 to 0.6 litas on the inner market.
At the same time, offer of cabbage is limited, and the prices are not expected to rise anymore since they have already reached a record – approximately 1-1.5 litas on the local market.
Usually, in harvest-abound years, Lithuanian farmers have enough vegetables for supply of the Lithuanian market.
