Food prices in Latvia in March rise 5% to 24%

Food prices in Latvia continued to rise in March 2011, with prices for some products increasing as much as 24% from February, Agricultural Market Promotion Center's head Inguna Gulbe told the business portal Nozare.lv.

According to the Agricultural Market Promotion Center's data, this past March prices increased the most for tangerines (24%, from LVL 1.02 to LVL 1.27 per kilogram), "Lipton Yellow Label" tea (10%, from LVL 0.95 to LVL 1.05 per pack), as well as beet (8%), oranges (6%), rice (5%) and others, writes LETA.

 

On the other hand, prices decreased for grapes (25%), plums (11%), imported cucumbers (10%), radish (9%), bananas (6%).

 

Compared to March 2010, the steepest increase was registered for cabbage prices – 195%, potatoes – 131%, buckwheat – 119%, onions – 66%, beet – 62%, coffee "Merrild" – 42%, "Janagold" apples – 41%, milk (3.5% fat content) and pears – 40%, sour cream – 37%, bananas – 29%, kefir and orange juice – 25%, cheese and carrots – 24%, butter – 23%.

 

On the other hand, the biggest price reductions were registered for red paprika (34%), cauliflower (31%), yellow paprika (16%).

 

Gulbe said that further price increases were expected in several product groups in the near future due to the rising prices of raw materials or imported products.
