On 16 September 1988, Atgimimas appeared as information bulletin of the reform movement of Lithuania (Lietuvos Persitvarkymo Sajudis).
According to its first editor-in-chief Romualdas Ozolas, the first edition was not censored and the editorial staff tried to prepare a fairly neutral edition, that its start would not be marked by conflicts with authorities, reports ELTA.
Later on, according to lrt.lt, the censorship banned one edition and confiscated paper; therefore, publishers had to print the newspaper on oil-paper.
According to Ozolas, at the beginning of Atgimimas, there was already an intense waiting for spiritual rebirth and critical attitude towards authorities.
Indre Makaraityte, current editor-in-chief of the daily Atgimimas, states that not only Atgimimas is to face many challenges, but society, civic community, which is concerned about the things happening around it, as well.
The first edition of Sajudis" daily Respublika appeared on 16 September 1989. Later, the daily became independent.
In 1990, Respublika became the thickest daily in Lithuania.
On 7 January 1991, the first Respublika in Russian appeared.
On 12 October 1993, Vitas Lingys, one of the founders of Respublika, was killed near his home, supposedly for the discreditable articles of the daily.
In 1998, Respublika established its own printing house.
At the moment, the daily Respublika has various supplements: Laisvalaikis, Pastoge, Gyvenimas, Julius ir Brigita, TV Publika.
The daily, which had been published for almost two decades, succeeded in achieving its audience and claiming firm stands in the world of mass media.
According to Ramune Vaiciulyte, editor-in-chief of Respublika, the daily never tended to hide something from its readership, in spite of difficult situations, blackmail and terror.
