Today front pages of the newspapers have been left blank, writes LETA/ELTA.
"A front blank page is a sign which, we admit, had to be shown already in 2009, when we received a first knockout blow by from the government – VAT increased four times and taxes for honoraria were raised (by the way we agree it had to be done, but not in such a cracking pace)." Martynas Vainorius, Editor of daily Vakaru Ekspresas said.
Due to a new tax reform, already in 2009 publishing of newspapers and magazines has slowed down, journalists and other press sector employees had to be dismissed immensely. Number of subscribers kept declining, the remaining newspapers and magazines got more expensive and their sales decreased.
Front blank pages are also one of the first foundations of regional press unification, and this is the greatest victory, Vakaru Ekspresas said.
