Berzins and Lithuanian foreign minister agree to cooperate on acceptable conditions for EU agricultural and cohesion funds

Today, Latvian President Andris Berzins met with visiting Lithuanian Foreign Minister Audronius Azubalis, discussing matters related to the European Union's multi annual budget and agreeing to cooperate in achieving acceptable conditions for the bloc's agricultural and cohesion policy funds, LETA was informed by the Presidential Press Service.

The officials also discussed the latest developments in Latvian-Lithuanian relations, including the issue of the Latvian-Lithuanian sea border, the recent NATO Summit in Chicago, cooperation within the EU.

 

Berzins lauded the excellent cooperation between Latvian-Lithuanian parliaments, presidents and residents. He also noted that Lithuania is Latvia's main foreign trade partner.

 

Azubalis in turn expressed desire to promote bilateral cooperation in culture, since both countries are united by common descent languages and strong historical bonds. Berzins supported the motion and promised to discuss it with the Latvian culture minister.

 

The sides also touched upon the Latvian-Lithuanian Sea Border Agreement. The president expressed hope for a mutually acceptable solution in this regard.

 

As reported, today, Azubalis arrived on a one-day visit to Latvia.

 

The Foreign Ministry emphasizes that Latvian-Lithuanian relations are very close and on multiple levels. Latvian-Lithuanian officials' dialogue is active and regular on all levels. Lithuania remains Latvia's most important foreign trade partner.

 

Azubalis has been serving as Lithuanian foreign minister since February 11, 2010. He was invited to Latvia by Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics during his visit to Lithuania last November.
