This summer, just 2.5 hectares of forests were destroyed by forest fires, which is the smallest amount in 90 years, LETA/Postimees reports.

"This is an extraordinary year, it hasn’t been that small ever," Environmental Information Centre (EIC) forest management department head Enn Pärt said.

The number is the smallest since 1921, when the forest fires data was first recorded in Estonia. That year, there were 437 fires in which 2,278 hectares of forests were destroyed.

Actually already last year was a record. Then there were 24 forest fires with total area of 19.3 hectares. In comparison, there was the year 2008 when 71 forest fires destroyed 1,279 hectares and 2006, when 250 fires destroyed 3,095 hectares.

This year, there were just five forest fires, according to EIC data. This doesn't include really mall fires and thus Rescue Board data can be different from these figures.

"Spring, summer, autumn were relatively wet," Pärt explained the statistics. "The figures fluctuate a lot – for example in 1957, also just 22 hectares was in fire. It is connected mainly to the weather."
