Lithuanians are not taking advantage of dairy crisis in Russia

BC, Vilnius, 18.03.2013.Print version
Although Russia has restricted import of German dairy products, Lithuanians are not going to take advantage of such opportunity and increase volume of dairy products transporting to the neighbouring country. Diary manufacturers say that they do not feel the lack of diary products in Russia but the situation may change if the embargo stays until April 2013, informs LETA/ELTA.

In such case Lithuanian businessmen would have to enter competitive fight in Russian diary products market. Currently, Lithuania exports around 30% of produced diary.

Board Chairman of dairy processing company Rokiskio Suris, Dalius Trumpa says that too little time has passed form the embargo for the lack of dairy products to occur. "So far export to Russia did not increase because temporary constraints for German companies were introduced as of mid February, companies still have stock supplies. It is hard to say how everything will be because it is not the first time such restrictions are imposed," says Trumpa.

Currently, Germany is one of the main leaders in Russia's diary products market. Who will take their place when due to embargo there will be a lack of German diary products?

"Russia's market is very large and it never stays empty. But it is not that easy, someone is banned and the other occupies the niche. It is not like this, I decide to export more and I do it, or I want less and I export less. Our manufacturers have long-term contracts for specific amounts. It is hard to say whether Lithuanian production will be chosen or its volume share will be increased. Not everything depends on our business but also on Russia's traders' choice," says Deputy Chairman of Chamber of Agriculture Bronius Markauskas who did not dare to guess whether diary crisis in Russia will be beneficial to Lithuania's manufacturers.
