Latvian Saeima approves in principle prohibiting sale of energy drinks to underage persons

Today, Latvian Saeima approved in the first reading a new bill prohibiting the sale of energy drinks to persons under the age of eighteen, informs LETA.

The bill was submitted by MPs Vladimirs Reskajs (Harmony Center), Raivis Dzintars (All for Latvia!-For Fatherland and Freedom/LNNK), Viktors Valainis, Gunars Igaunis (Reform Party), Raimonds Vejonis (Greens/Farmers) and Karlis Serzants (Greens/Farmers).

 

The bill stipulates that retailers will be obliged to request personal IDs from buyers, making sure that energy drinks are sold only to those above eighteen. The sale of energy drinks will be prohibited in educational institutions and on their territories. In addition, energy drinks will be placed separately from food products to be easily distinguishable and labeled "high caffeine content, not recommended for pregnant or breast-feeding women". Several restrictions will also be placed on energy drink advertisements.
