BC, Tallinn, 29.04.2013.Print version
The Estonian government approved last week of the new European Union budget period Estonian part proposals, of which nearly 100 million euros is planned for nature protection, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

While currently, the focus in using EU funds in the environmental sphere is on investments in water and waste management, in the new period the focus will be on nature protection.

In 2014-2020, the focus is on preserving and restoring natural diversity of natural resources. Valuable habitants that are the home of animals, birds, plants and mushrooms need care. For this the water regime of bogs has to be restored and the spawning possibilities of fish have to be improved, for example. Several lakes and rivers that have been contaminated with dangerous substances will be cleaned and buildings polluting the ground water will be demolished.

One of the biggest spheres is reducing the environmental footprint of companies and supporting sustainable use of resources, for which 131 million euros is planned.

Sustainable energy management is also in a focal position and money from sale of excess pollution quota will be invested in using biogas in transport. Renovation of public buildings will be continues and quota money will be used to prevent and ease floods.

Ministers will introduce the proposals to the Riigikogu on May 8 and they will be approved by the European Commission.
