BC, Vilnius, 16.05.2013.Print version
On May 12, the Lithuanian Customs officers detained at Lavorikes road, according to preliminary data, the largest smuggled drug shipment in the Lithuanian history, the authority said in a report, cites LETA/ELTA.

A particularly sophisticated hiding place, operated by pneumatic devices, was detected in a truck that carried perishable products from Lithuania to Belarus. A total of 768 kg of hashish was found in the hiding place. The approximate value of the drugs on the black market is LTL 23.5 million (EUR 6.8 million).

A citizen of Lithuania, having arrived by truck Scania to Lavoriskes road post on Sunday declared to the customs officers that he was carrying perishable cargo (vegetables and fruit) to Belarus. However, upon weighing the said truck, the officers established that the weight of the car did not comply with its weight declared in the documents. The x-ray control system showed that a hiding place could be made in the bottom of the FRUEHAUF refrigerator semi-trailer of the truck. Suspicions intensified when the officers drilled the floor of the semi-trailer: the initial drug detection test showed that plant residues, which remained on the drill, could be cannabis resin – hashish.

Using the found equipment, the customs officers finally managed to raise the refrigerator semi-trailer from the semi-trailer's frame and to find the hiding place in its bottom. 768 kg of plant substance, suspected to be hashish, were found there.

The driver of the truck was detained for two days, later arrested.
