Latvian Medical Association will prepare several legislative initiatives in order to curb the use of pesticides and other substances that affect the development of human hormone system, including trans fats, the association's president Peteris Apinis told LETA.

According to Apinis, said initiatives will be aimed at minimizing the effect of pesticides and other dangerous substances on children. "In Iceland, trans fats are banned outright, the maximum permissible percentage in Denmark and Switzerland is 2%," says Apinis, explaining that there are no such restrictions in Latvia.

Apinis mentioned Sweden as a good example to follow where the environment minister is doing a very good job in promoting green thinking. There is no such leader in Latvia, which is why the Medical Association will take the initiative to draw up said legislative initiatives, said Apinis.

On the other hand, Health Minister Ingrida Circene (Unity) emphasizes that the fight against trans fats began already in 2011 and is continuing, and that the ministry will closely cooperate with the Medical Association in this regard. The Health Ministry's is working on several relevant bills at the moment, notes Circene.

As for pesticides, this is not the Health Ministry's competence but rather a responsibility of the Agriculture Ministry, added Circene.
