Latvian medics call for immediate action against bootleggers

BC, Riga, 19.10.2013.Print version
On October 18th, 2013, the Latvian Medical Association sent a letter to Saeima and the Cabinet of Ministers, demanding immediate action against underground alcohol sellers, the association informed LETA.

The Latvian Medical Association will discuss the situation during the next meeting of its board. It is also possible that the association will call on Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis to demand Interior Minister Rihards Kozlovskis' (Reform Party) resignation due to the minister's inaction and statements about illegal alcohol distribution, calling it an insignificant crime.

The association believes that strong political and readiness to take responsible decisions in the best interests of society are needed to combat illegal alcohol distribution.

So far, the Interior Ministry has not managed to liquidate underground alcohol outlets, which can be found in every city in Latvia, explains the association.

In its letter, the association mentions last week's tragedy in Jelgava, when several people died after consuming bootleg alcohol.
