Lithuanian carriers' trucks seized in Belarus

Due to different interpretation of cross-border agreements, Lithuanian carriers' towing vehicles with semitrailers are still being seized in Belarus. This year alone, at least six Lithuanian vehicles have been seized in the neighbouring country, reports LETA/ELTA.

"As far as we know, a total of 17 vehicles which belong to 7 Lithuanian companies have been seized. But these are only those companies which had informed Linava (The Lithuanian National Road Carriers' Association) about seizures," said Linava's representative Gintautas Ramaslauskas told Elta in a telephone interview.

According to Ramaslauskas, trucks in Belarus are being seized due to contradictions in the bilateral cargo transportation agreements, signed by Lithuania and Eastern countries, and the Eurasian Union's (Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Kyrghyztan) Customs Code.

"The Eurasian Union's Customs Code does not allow conducting transits among the Customs Union countries with vehicles that entered a member country on a temporary basis if these vehicles are not registered in respective member countries. However, our cross-border agreements with Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan and other countries allow it if a vehicle has a special permit," Linava's representative said.
