Ice in the South West Estonian Pärnu port has become 50 cm thick and piled up while air temperatures are forecast to stay low, which is why the Estonian Waterways board toughens starting February 14 the requirements on ships that want to sail in the area, LETA/Postimees Online reports.
The ships that enter and exit the port and can be serviced by an icebreaker have to have ice class of 1B according to the Lloyd`s registry or similar class of other classification societies and the main engine capacity has to be at least 2,000 kW.
Since December 28, the requirement was ice class 1C by Lloyd`s and main engine capacity of at least 1,600 kW.
Icebreaker Eva-316 woks on Pärnu and Livonian Bay since December 19.
