Estonian port operator Saarte Liinid concluded a cooperation project with its Latvian partner on Friday, in the framework of which the port in the Ruhnu island will be deepened and the cargo quay of the Roomassaare port in Saaremaa will be renovated, LETA/Meie Maa writes.

The participants of the joint venture are the port of Mersrags, Kurland and ADA from Latvia, as well as Saarte Liinid from Estonia. The cost of the project for Estonia is EEK 13 million, of which Saarte Liinid gives 15% or EEK two million.

Saarte Liinid project manager Anne Oolup said that the proposal to submit a joint application for funds from the Estonian-Latvian cross-border cooperation program came from the Mersrags port. She said that the state of small ports in Latvia is much worse than in Estonian ports while it is hard for them to get finances from other programs. She added that Latvians were most interested in including the Ruhnu port since a lot of their ships sail there in summer.

The work should be completed by the end of this year.

Nearly EEK 600 million has been allocated from the European Regional Development Fund for the development of border regions via the Estonian-Latvian cross-border cooperation program in six years.
