1937 "BMW 328" formerly owned by Latvian man auctioned for EUR 4.3 mln
The car was sold confidentially, so the identity of the buyer is unknown. The organizers claim that the sum promised for this "BMW 328" is one of the highest in the history of "RM Auctions".
This particular vehicle's history started with its being used for professional racing in the late 30's, before coming into the possession of German Minister of Armaments and War Production Albert Speer during World War II, writes LETA.
With the end of the war, the car was confiscated by the Soviet Union, and was given as an award to "MiG" fighter plane constructor Artem Mikoyan. The famous aircraft designer later allowed his son to use the vehicle; however, his son's reckless behavior encouraged him to get rid of the car, which he gave to Rigan Gvido Adamsons in 1972 in exchange for a "Lada" automobile.
With the fall of the Iron Curtain, Adamsons delivered the car from Riga to Munich, where it once again became the property of BMW. Since then the car has been maintained and restored, before finally finding its new owner today.
The auction saw the sale of automobiles worth a total of EUR 33.2 million (LVL 23.3 million) to buyers from 33 countries, some of whom took part by telephone, some through the Internet, while others attended in person.
"RM Auctions" is one of the largest organizers of automobile auctions, and has been operating for more than 30 years.
