Dombrovskis launches investigation into sale of airBaltic trademark

Alla Petrova, BC, Riga, 05.08.2010.Print version
Latvia’s Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis (New Era) has launched an investigation into the sale of the airBaltic trademark, and has suspended a visit to the airline planned for tomorrow, August 6, LETA was informed by the prime minister's press secretary Liga Krapane.

Dombrovskis today signed a resolution for Transport Minister Kaspars Gerhards (For Fatherland And Freedom/LNNK) which instructs the Transport Ministry, as the state's shareholder in airBaltic, to evaluate whether the action of the airline's board and council members who were in office at the time of the deal was in conformity with their legally defined duties.

This was done in consideration of the publicly-released information that in December 2009, Air Baltic Corporation carried out the sale to one of its shareholders – the company Baltijas aviacijas sistemas – of six airBaltic trademarks (airBaltic, "airBaltic.com", "airBaltic Travel.com", "airBalticHotels", "BalticMiles", and "Baltic Taxi"), as well as the fact that the said deal, according to information in the public domain, was approved by the airBaltic council.

If it is established that members of the board or council have violated the Commercial Law, the transport minister will be instructed to carry out the necessary actions for raising a claim against these persons.

Considering these circumstances and the necessity of establishing the deal's conformity with the law, the prime minister has suspended Friday's planned visit to airBaltic for an undetermined time.
