Review of cargo handling in Klaipėda and other eastern coast Baltic Sea ports in January – May of 2011

In May of 2011 Klaipėda Port climbed to a new cargo handling record of a month throughout the total history of the Port. The seaborn cargo handling capacity reached up to 3,19 million tons in May, i.e. more by 22,5% than in May of 2010 (in January of 2011 the Port handled 3,175 million tons of cargo). In May of 2011 the container handling turnover per month for the first time throughout the history of the Port exceeded the limit of 40 thousand TEU. The containerised cargo handling turnover reached 46 596 TEU in May of 2011.

This rate already for the third time has hit the record of container handling (TEU) throughout the first five months of this year, informed BC port’s of Klaipeda press service.

According to cargo groups in May:

Dry and bulk cargoes increased by    +33,1%, totally 1 199,3 thousand tons were handled.

General cargoes increased by           +20,8%, totally 1 010,7 thousand tons were handled.

Liquefied cargoes increased by         +13,1%, totally 978,4 thousand tons were handled.

 

thousand tons of Ro-Ro cargo,i.e. more by 13,5%, or by 50,6 thousand tons comparing with thecorresponding period of the previous year were handled in May of 2011. Calculating in units 22 603 units of this cargo, i.e. more by 14,9% or by 2 934 units were handled comparing with May of the previous year.

 

Handling volumes of fertilizers in May of 2011 made 1 054,1 thousand tons, i,.e. more by 67,6% or by425,3 thousand tons comparing with the corresponding period of 2010.Volumes of containerised cargohandling (calculating in TEU) were 46 596 TEU, i.e. more even by 75,5% or by 20 045 TEU thanduring the corresponding period of 2010. In terms of tonnage the turnover of containerised cargo handling also jumped up. Calculating in tons the increase was 50,4% or 154,0 thousand tons, in total 459,5 thousand tons were handled comparing with the corresponding period of 2010.  426,8

 

The handling of oil products also increased slightly. 854,6 thousand tons of oil products were handled in May of 2011, the change is +2,4% or +20,4 thousand tons.

 

In May of this year 30 572 passengers, i.e. less by 11,8%, or by 4092 passengers than during the corresponding month of 2010 visited Klaipėda Port. In May of 2011 Klaipeda Port opened the cruise vessel season. In May of this year 3 659 cruise passengers, i.e. less by 3 152 cruise passengers or by 46,3% comparing with the corresponding period of 2010.

 

539 vessels, i.e. more by 8,0% or by 47 vessels comparing with the corresponding month of the previous year called Klaipėda port in May of 2011.
