Slesers: special assignment secretariats should be liquidated in Latvia

Alla Petrova, BC, Riga, 25.08.2008.Print version
Most probably, the special assignment secretariats should be liquidated, Transport Minister Ainars Slesers (Latvia's First Party/Latvia's Way), who is currently standing in for the prime minister, said after the government meeting today.

Ainars Slesers.

However, Slesers underlined, this decision has not been adopted yet and Prime Minister Ivars Godmanis (Latvia's First Party/Latvia's Way) has to decide about it in person himself.

In Slesers' opinion, the ministries could take over the functions currently assigned to the special assignment secretariats. Liquidating the secretariats would allow to spare budget resources.

On July 28, after a meeting with Godmanis, Finance Minister Atis Slakteris (People's Party) admitted that elaboration of next year's budget will bring forward the question on dramatically reducing the number of employees in state administration institutions, as well as liquidating the special assignment secretariats.

The minister pointed out that the global economic situation, also influencing Latvia, could make the government adopt even stronger measures to reduce next year's budget expenditures as planned before.
