Tomorrow, August 30, passenger train traffic between Riga and Ventspils will be resumed and the first train, after a seven-year break, will depart from Ventspils to Riga, as LETA was informed by Reinholds Pelse, board chairman at the company Pasazieru vilciens (Passenger Train).

The train will ply the route on a daily basis, departing from Ventspils at 6:20 a.m. and arriving in Riga at 9:05 a.m., and in the opposite direction – departing from Riga at 6:15 p.m. and arriving in Ventspils at 8:56 p.m, informs LETA.

The train employed on the Ventspils-Riga route is a modern, high-comfort diesel engine train, which will stop also at Sloka, Tukums, Kandava, Sabile, Stende, Spare and Ugale, completing the whole route in two hours 45 minutes. One-way ticket will cost LVL 3.95. The train will be able to carry 210 passengers.

Ventspils Vice-Mayor Janis Vitolins said: "The road traffic between Ventspils and Riga has been increasingly constantly, and I am confident that many car drivers will choose to use the train from now on to be able to get to their destination faster and without any complications. Probably the number of bus passengers could decrease as well. [..] The main thing is that people will have the possibility to choose," Vitolins underlined.

Today the new route was inaugurated in a ceremony where several officials, including Transport Minister Ainars Slesers, Pelse and Vitolins, participated and later took a ride from Riga to Ventspils.
