Estonian roads to get a dozen new traffic cameras

14 new traffic cameras will start catching traffic hooligans in April in Tallinn and well as on the Tallinn-Narva highway, LETA/Eesti Päevaleht reports.

Four cameras will be installed in one of the busiest intersections in Tallinn, the so-called Taksopark intersection. These cameras will not observe just drivers adhering to the speed limit but also running a red light and incorrect use of the public transport lane. It is not known yet though when the violators caught on these cameras would get their first fines.

Tiit Laiksoo from Tallinn's transport department said that the interior ministry is preparing a supplement to the warning proceedings systems and should be ready with it by autumn. In 2011, the transport department observed that intersection for a week and discovered nearly 4,000 violations a day. The number of violations is expected to decrease ten times when the cameras start working but it would still yield around 1.9 million euros of fines a year.

The next few months will also see ten new cameras installed in the Tallinn-Narva highway, eight on the Jõhvi-Narva section and two in the Varja region.
