Tallinn to write off 22 trolley-buses

The Tallinn Tram and Trolley-bus Company is planning to reduce its fleet consisting of 103 trolley-bus by 22 vehicles this year due to their insufficient technical condition, the Estonian national broadcasting corporation ERR reports referring to Ohtuleht.

The municipal company's Chairman Toomas Sepp stated that currently ninety-nine trolleys are operational, writes LETA.

The company's board is planning to purchase three new low-floor trolleys, which are accessible for wheelchairs and baby carriages. The cost of each vehicle is around 600,000 to 650,000 euros. A public procurement will be announced this year, the board said.

The City of Tallinn plans to merge the municipal companies responsible for the city's bus, tram and trolley services by September.

As reported, in 2011, the number of passengers carried by Estonian transport enterprises continued to decrease for the fifth consecutive year, as data of the Statistics Estonia shows.

The decline in the number of public transport passengers was mostly affected by the fall in the number of passengers in urban transport. Transport enterprises carried more goods in comparison with the previous year in 2011.

Urban transport (i.e. buses, trams and trolleybuses) was used by nearly 117 million passengers, 13% (more than 17 million passengers) less than a year before. The number of passengers in other domestic road transport (excl. urban transport) increased by 7% during the year, but decreased slightly in domestic railway traffic. The number of passengers in domestic maritime transport and flights increased by 1% and by 12%, respectively.
