Lithuania road carriers urge long-distance truck drivers vote in elections

Lithuanian national road carriers' association Linava has joined the civic campaign "As Balsuosiu!" ("I Will Vote!"), organized by the Central Electoral Commission (VRK). The campaign seeks to urge long-distance truck drivers, who often work abroad, and Lithuania's citizens currently residing in foreign countries to vote in the upcoming elections to the Seimas of Lithuania.

Linava President Algimantas Kondrusevicius says that at first their association's initiative may look slightly bizarre but the carriers themselves wish to vote while being abroad, writes LETA/ELTA.

"Around 25,000 our drivers work abroad, while the road transport sector employs about 60,000 specialists. Along with their family members they make a significant size community of 200,000 people. The results of elections sometimes are determined just by a couple of votes in favour. Therefore, we decided to support the VRK campaign and invite employees of our carriers and all Lithuanians working abroad not to miss a chance to shape the future of their homeland," he said Tuesday in a news conference.

Drivers wishing to vote will only have to present their identity document at Lithuania's embassies and consulates in foreign countries not later than 10 days ahead of the elections.

"We want to help people recover their self-confidence and understand that every single vote matters," the president of the association stressed.

The first election round will be held on October 14, the second round will take place on October 28. The elections are expected to cost about LTL 19 million (EUR 5.5 million).
