Speed cameras switched back in Latvia

Alla Petrova, BC, Riga, 13.10.2012.Print version
The State Police this afternoon reached agreement with V-Traffic (previously – Vitronic Baltica un partneri) on resuming operations of speed cameras in Latvia.

The speed cameras are operating from today, October 13, but not longer than until December 31, Interior Ministry's press officer Gunta Skrebele told LETA.

As reported, the State Police's contract with V-Traffic on deployment of speed cameras in Latvia expired on September 28. A few days before that the government ordered the Interior Ministry to assess buying 57 speed cameras, which were already operational, from the German manufacturer Vitronic GmbH.

While the Interior Ministry is evaluating opportunities for buying the speed cameras, the State Police is holding talks with V-Traffic on reaching a temporary agreement so speed cameras could be switched back on.
