More traffic cameras, less violations in Estonia in 2012

The Estonian police confirms that while more traffic cameras are added to Estonian roads every year, the number of registered speed limit violations has fallen, meaning traffic has become smoother, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

"There are nearly 40 traffic cameras in Estonian roads now, but traffic participants given them less and less work," said Police and Border Guard Board law enforcement police department head Tarmo Miilits. He said that in 2011, there were ten cameras less and the amount of recorded speeding cases was by a third bigger than in 2012.

Miilits said that the decision made last spring to not raise speed limit to 100 km/h in many roads for summer also made traffic smoother.

Last years' statistics show that there were 13% fewer traffic accidents where people get killed, 8% less accidents where people were injured and the total number of injured people fell 11%.

"This is a positive step towards better but not at the level of 2010 yet. Then 79 people died in traffic, last year 88 died," said Miilits.
