Valued at around 17 million euros and carried out by construction company YIT Lietuva, the key reconstruction work has seen the container terminal's capacity doubled from 500,000 to 1 million TEU.
"The adaptation of this territory to the container terminal's activity and the acquisition of new equipment – we expect to receive the last crane for ship loading late next year – will see our capacity double, compared to last year," Rimantas Juska, CEO at Klaipedos Nafta, told BNS.
In his words, around 95% of work has been done in Klaipedos Smelte's territory following the completion of the reconstruction work. The company has invested 16.1 million euros in equipment upgrading in recent years, and another 12.7 million euros have been invested into engineering networks. A total of 64.7 million euros will be invested in 2018-2020.
Last year, Klaipedos Smelte saw its container handling volumes plunge 34 percent to 254,000 TEU, compared to 387,000 TEU in 2018. The total handling volumes went down by 35.3 percent to 3.3 million tons, from 5.14 million tons in 2018.
