Mobile communications operator Tele2 has launched its 5G base station in Riga, at the intersection of Brivibas and Gertrudes streets, Oskars Firmanis, Tele2's public relations manager in Latvia, informed LETA.

He pointed out that thus the Tele2 5G network is currently available in seven Latvian cities - Riga, Jelgava, Daugavpils, Jurmala, Valmiera, Sigulda and Salacgriva.

Liga Krumina, Tele2's technical director, said that the company continues to expand its 5G network so that the first customers with 5G smartphones can try out the benefits of 5G in some places. "Currently, of course, these opportunities are not very extensive, so we will continue the active development of 5G next year," she said.

Krumina pointed out that in many parts of the world, in order to increase coverage faster and thus promote the development of various 5G business solutions, operators and state institutions are successfully working together. "We hope that mobile operators will be allowed to cooperate in the expansion and development of 5G technologies in Latvia as well," she added.

The company also informed that in parallel with expansion of 5G technologies, the 4G network is being expanded and capacity strengthened, as this technology will be able to meet daily technology needs for a long time to come. "So far this year, Tele2 has built 30 new 4G base stations in various parts of Latvia, as well as increased capacity for almost 200 stations to meet the demand for mobile communications," said Tele2 representatives.

As reported, Tele2 posted EUR 136.669 million in turnover last year, which is 4% more than a year earlier, while the company's profit increased by 2% to 31.519 million euros.

The company was registered in November 1995 and has a share capital of EUR 3.486 million. The sole owner of Tele2 is the Swedish Tele2 Sverige Aktiebolag.
