Some 13.1 mln packs of contraband tobacco products, worth over 46.4 mln euros in total, were seized in Lithuania in January-September 2020, compared with 6.8 mln packs in the full year 2019, according to figures from the Customs Department writes LETA/BNS.

Moe than nine tenths of the contraband cigarettes were made in Belarus.

Around 59 % of all smuggled cigarettes were detained on the border with Belarus, 15% on the border with Poland, and 26% inside Lithuania.

Large hauls of smuggled cigarettes containing a thousand boxes or more are often busted, the department noted.

An empty pack survey by Nielsen has shown that smuggled cigarettes currently account for around 19.3% of Lithuania's tobacco product market.
